The Studio Big Band, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Niess, celebrates Veterans Day with music inspired by world events as a salute to famous veteran musicians, with music from big bands, rock-n-roll, pop, and beyond. This performance features Shenandoah’s veteran faculty with music from veterans Sammy Nestico, Glenn Miller, Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, John Philip Sousa, Neal Hefti, and more.
The Trombone Collective, directed by Dr. Matthew Niess & Dr. Jeffrey Cortazzo, will perform on Monday, November 6. The concert will include the music of Madeline Lee, Paul Hindemith, Evan Williams, Jeff Cortazzo, Norman Bolter, Manny Album, and others. Come out and hear our 20-plus-strong choir!

The UNCSA Brass Weekend presents Brass Impact!, featuring some of the most renown brass soloist from around the globe. Trumpet virtuoso Adam Rapa (opens in new tab), “a musician who could put more famous horn blowers to shame,” according to the Tampa Tribune. Jeff Scott (opens in new tab) is the Associate Professor of Horn at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, formerly of the Imani Winds, a former member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Dance Theater of Harlem orchestras and has performed numerous times with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. Matt Niess (opens in new tab) is the leader of The Capitol Bones, instructor of jazz at Shenandoah Conservatory and former lead trombone of U.S. Army Blues for nearly thirty-years who has performed with many top entertainers such as Ray Charles, Frankie Valli, Doc Severinson and Mel Torme.

Shenandoah Conservatory is proud to serve as a site for an Essentially Ellington Regional High School Band Festival in Winchester, Virginia, on Thursday 4 May, 2023 . Director of Jazz Studies and Trombone Artist-in-Residence Matthew Niess will serve as director of this year’s event.
