Women in jazz—from educators to performers, and conductors to producers—have struggled for equal recognition. They get their due in a lecture-concert presentation featuring Charlie Young, SJMO’s artistic director and professor of jazz studies at Howard University. Young highlights the contributions of some of the leading women in jazz as the SJMO performs music they’ve made famous: pianist, composer, and writer Marian McPartland (“Ambiance”); pianist, composer, and band leader Toshiko Akiyoshi (“March of the Tadpoles)”; and saxophonist, arranger, and educator (and SJMO member) Leigh Pilzer (“East Coast Andy”).

The Duke and the Count

One of the early pioneers of big-band jazz, Ellington and Billy Strayhorn composed and orchestrated such iconic selections as “Take the A Train,” “The Flaming Sword,” “Star-Crossed Lovers,” and many other legendary works to the jazz canon. Pianist and band leader Basie and his orchestra were recognized as one of the preeminent bands during the swing era, moving audiences with works like "One O’Clock Jump", “Mambo Inn”, and "Jumpin’ at the Woodside."

In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra juxtaposes the music of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Count Basie Orchestra.

Join the New Orchestra of Washington in honoring anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela. We’re excited to premiere a special commission by South African composer Mokale Koapeng, commissioned by Classical Movements for us to perform. Join us on March 17 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.

The Capitol Bones All-Brass Big Band has been performing A Stan Kenton Christmas for over 15 years performing the original works of Stan Kenton, Ralph Carmichael, Mark Taylor and they have added new arrangements to the repertoire. This is the only band that has mellophones in the place of saxophones just as the Kenton Band intended.
